Acupuncture
An ancient alternative to better health
Acupuncture, probably the best known alternative healing treatment, is also one of the oldest tools for treating the body, going back nearly 3,500 years to ancient China. Today, thousands of people in the U.S. and around the world achieve better health through this ancient treatment.
Acupuncture is based on the tenets of Chinese medicine, in which the body is viewed as a single working unit, rather than invidual systems. Acupuncturists evaluate body, mind and soul together in order to restore the flow of Qi (pronouced "chee") throughout the body. Chinese healers belive that when the circulation of Qi is disrupted by injuries, heat, cold or other influences, diseases occur. Acupuncture redirects the flow of Qi, helping to cure and prevent disease and restore natural harmony.
Scientific studies suggest that acupuncture works because needle insertion stimulates the production of endorphins, natural pain killing substances produced in the brain. Other theories indicate that stimulation of acupuncture points prevents pain impules from reaching the brain.
During acupuncture treatments...
After you and Dr. Jen determine that acupuncture is an appropriate treatment, you'll schedule an appointment. When you arrive for your first treatment, you'll lie down or take a relaxed sitting position.
The needles are inserted at various acupuncture points along the body's meridians, and then turned or lifted to stimulate the flow of energy.
Virtually painless, each acupuncture treatment session lasts between 10 and 30 minutes. Costs range from $35 to $75 per sessions, and many health insurance plans cover it.
